Sustainable water management in avocado farming: 6G-PATH UC FARM 1 showcases research and recognition

The 6G-PATH project is pleased to share recent progress from Use Case UC FARM 1 – Water Saving, led by project partners CSIC and the University of Málaga (UMA). This use case focuses on leveraging advanced digital technologies to promote efficient water use in avocado farming, addressing both climate resilience and sustainable agriculture.

The research is being carried out at the Instituto de Hortofruticultura Subtropical y Mediterránea “La Mayora” (IHSM La Mayora), a joint research centre operated by CSIC and UMA in Algarrobo-Costa, Málaga. IHSM La Mayora serves as a key site for experimental work and technology validation.

Key updates from the use case

Academic research output
Carlos González, a master’s student affiliated with UMA, completed his thesis titled “Physiology of avocado (Persea americana) under soil water shortage conditions: sensorization and anatomy of aerial organs”. The study explores the role of sensor-based monitoring in understanding how avocado plants respond to water stress-contributing valuable data to the use case’s experimental framework.

Project dissemination
The 6G-PATH project was presented during the recent retreat of IHSM La Mayora, providing increased visibility among researchers and institutional stakeholders, and reinforcing the link between agricultural science and 6G-driven innovation — see the presentation photo to the right.

Recognition for innovation
The UC FARM 1 initiative has been selected as a finalist in the Santander X Innovative Project Entrepreneur Awards. This distinction highlights the societal relevance and innovation potential of the work conducted by CSIC and UMA. The final results of the awards are expected in early July 2025.

About UC FARM 1
