XR trials bring immersive learning to rural Romanian classrooms

As part of the 6G-PATH project’s Use Case UC-EDU-1, our partner Fundația Orange conducted a series of XR (Extended Reality) trials in April and May 2025, bringing immersive educational experiences to two rural schools in Romania: Corbii Mari and “Nicolae Russu” School in Sita Buzăului.

The small-scale trials, held on April 28 and May 19, introduced XR technology to teachers through interviews, focus groups, and hands-on sessions. Teachers explored classroom applications of XR, shared expectations, and helped define Key Value Indicators (KVIs) for future deployment.

Educators praised XR’s potential to:

  • Engage students with interactive learning

  • Improve understanding of complex subjects like physics and biology

  • Increase inclusion by offering virtual access to places and experiences otherwise out of reach

However, they also highlighted practical challenges, such as limited headset availability, unstable Wi-Fi, content suitability, and occasional physical discomfort for students, especially those wearing glasses.

Building on early insights, a large-scale XR training and classroom trial took place at Corbii Mari School on May 16. Teachers received immersive training on the ClassVR platform, learning to plan lessons, use the equipment safely, and manage XR sessions in real time.

These trials clearly aligned with several 6G-PATH KVIs, including improved student engagement, digital inclusion, and teacher motivation. The strong interest from educators and the promising results lay the groundwork for broader XR adoption across Romania’s rural schools.
