EduSplats
Next-gen volumetric learning with Gaussian Splatting
Web-based Gaussian Splats and volumetric video for immersive education
EduSplats is an innovative project that advances immersive digital education by integrating next-generation volumetric capture with 6G-enabled infrastructure. Building on the results of the IMAGINE-B5G project (OC#2-170), EduSplats introduces a transformative upgrade to holographic learning experiences through the adoption of 4D Gaussian Splatting.
Â
Volumetric video has already demonstrated its potential to enhance hybrid and remote education by enabling educators to create lifelike 3D holograms accessible through WebAR. However, current polygonal mesh-based representations limit visual fi delity and realism. EduSplats addresses this constraint by extending Volograms’ AI-powered volumetric capture pipeline to support Gaussian Splats, a breakthrough 3D representation method capable of delivering photorealistic, dynamic scenes. This step-change in quality will enable highly detailed lessons in domains such as anatomy, engineering, and cultural heritage, signifi cantly enhancing learner engagement and comprehension.
Â
The project will integrate Gaussian Splat support directly into Vologram Creator, ensuring educators can continue using familiar workfl ows without technical barriers. In parallel, EduSplats will enhance Volograms’ open-source compression and streaming codec to effi ciently handle the substantially larger datasets generated by Gaussian Splats. This contribution will benefi t the broader XR and research communities by providing scalable tools for high-fi delity immersive media delivery.
Â
Given the increased bandwidth, latency, and edge-processing demands of Gaussian Splats, EduSplats will leverage the 6G-PathToVLC testbed. The Immersive Lab environment, combining volumetric capture facilities, XR devices, holographic displays, and advanced network slicing, provides an ideal platform to validate performance under realistic 6G conditions.
Â
By bridging proven B5G experimentation with 6G innovation, EduSplats will demonstrate the feasibility and impact of delivering Gaussian Splat-based holographic education over next-generation networks.
