6G-PATH highlighted in keynote presentation at IEEE Engineering Day

The 6G-PATH project was proudly featured during a keynote address delivered by Prof. Susana Sargento from the Instituto de Telecomunicações and Universidade de Aveiro at this year’s IEEE Engineering Day, held on 21 November 2025 in Leiria, Portugal.

Invited as a keynote speaker, Prof. Sargento presented “On the road to 3D networks: from the ground to the air,” offering an insightful overview of emerging technologies that are shaping the evolution of next-generation connectivity. The presentation explored several pioneering research efforts, including:

  • Dynamic and multi-UAV mission planning developed under Project FRIENDS
  • The use of UAVs as flying base stations and NTN-powered 5G on demand under Project NewSpace
  • The application of these technologies in Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) scenarios, demonstrated through collaborative work within 6G-PATH, in partnership with Airbus US Space & Defense, Inc.

Prof. Sargento showcased how these advancements contribute to the vision of 3D networks, where terrestrial, aerial, and non-terrestrial platforms work seamlessly together to provide resilient, adaptive, and mission-critical communications.

As 6G technologies continue to evolve, the project remains committed to developing innovative, multi-layer connectivity solutions that will support Europe’s future communication infrastructure and enhance response capabilities for critical situations.
