UC FARM 2 - Smart Viticulture

Modular | Connected | Scalable

Terraview’s Crate – Your Secure Edge-Network Hub

Terraview’s Crate will provide the connectivity necessary for all the devices locally, being composed of a scaled compute and storage node, coupled with a small private and secure 5G/6G cell. Depending on the area to cover, the deployment may be comprised of multiple Crates. The modularity of the Crates, together with virtualized 5GCore from HPE will leverage the cloud continuum to properly locate the services.

The integration of AAVs and AGVs will explore the capabilities of the private network, through their requirements for low latency and high bandwidth, linked to eMBB and URLLC slices, while the energy-efficiency of the sensors will explore the capabilities of an mMTC slice. For this pilot operations, the cloud will be provided by the UMA testbed, while TEL, with its commercial network, will provide the backhaul for the connection between the edge and core nodes.

Use Case Overall

The Smart Vineyards use case addresses three key deployment scenarios tailored to varying levels of network connectivity and operational requirements.

Scenarios

Off-grid Deployment

This setup is designed for vineyards in remote areas with no reliable access to external networks or cloud services. All data processing and storage are managed locally using edge computing nodes (called Crates) placed within the vineyard. These nodes autonomously handle data collection, analysis, and storage, ensuring full data privacy and continuous operation despite the absence of connectivity. However, this approach demands robust on-site infrastructure and limits access to real-time updates or remote services.

Intermittent Connectivity

Here, vineyards experience occasional access to external networks, enabling periodic synchronization with cloud platforms. This is common in areas with unstable or partial connectivity. Edge nodes collect and temporarily store data locally, uploading it to the cloud during available connection windows. This allows for data backup and software updates without constant online access. While cost-effective, this model may delay real-time analytics and responsiveness during offline periods.

Interconnected Deployment

In this scenario, vineyards benefit from stable and continuous network access, allowing seamless integration between local edge devices and cloud-based systems. It supports real-time data analysis, frequent updates, and advanced automation. Edge nodes leverage both local and cloud resources for optimal performance and scalability. While this offers the highest efficiency, it requires a solid investment in reliable network infrastructure and ongoing maintenance.

Each scenario balances trade-offs between connectivity, autonomy, cost, and performance, offering tailored solutions to suit the specific operational context of different vineyards.

Key Objectives

Improved performance of increase in imagery processing time on-site (edge) compared to cloud by more than 5%.

Reduced performance of cloud resources dependency by at least 10%.

Improved security of data transfers from on-site deployments to the cloud (in off-grid, intermittent, and interconnected deployment modes).

Improved processing time by atuomated vineyard coverage by using AGVs and AAVs.

Quality and accuracy of the data with the use of on-site sensors.

Reduced costs in day to day operations by at least 10% with the use of energy efficient resources.

Potential chemicals and water usage reductions are enabled by early thread detection and prevention. This is reflected in the cost of applying phytosanitary products which is approximately 500 Euro per Ha.

Expected Innovations/Outcomes

Enhanced Vineyard Management Capabilities through the Deployment of Crates.

Improved Productivity and Efficiency in Vineyard Operations.

Advancements in 5G/6G Deployment Approaches and Service Placement Optimization.
