Remote Assistant 6G

6G-Enabled Assistive Tele-operation Platform for Connected Wheelchairs

Remote Attendant 6G is an innovative project approved under the 6G-Path Open Call 2, designed to transform assistive mobility through high-performance tele-operation. As Europe faces a significant demographic shift—with nearly 30% of the population projected to be over 65 by 2050—the demand for scalable, dignified care solutions has never been more urgent. This project addresses the mobility limitations of powered wheelchair users by developing a 6G-enabled “Remote Attendant” platform that allows professional caregivers to virtually assist navigation in complex environments.

The technical core of the project leverages the KAU (Karlstad University) testbed, specifically targeting the KAU_02 use case: Service differentiation and resource isolation through network slicing and Quality-on-Demand (QoD) APIs. By integrating a hardware-agnostic retrofit kit οnto existing motorized wheelchairs, the platform enables real-time, low-latency video streaming and remote control.

A critical innovation is the implementation of Network Slicing to isolate high-bandwidth eMBB traffic (4K video feeds) from mission-critical URLLC traffic (navigation and safety commands). Using CAMARA QoD APIs, the system dynamically requests network priority during periods of congestion to ensure a “glass-to-glass” latency of under 40ms and a command latency below 10ms. This level of responsiveness is essential for safe operation in “Living Lab” conditions like the KAU campus, where pedestrians and physical obstacles require immediate reaction times.

Starting at TRL 6 and aiming for TRL 7, the project will move from lab-controlled settings to real-world validation at the CARL-W testbed. Beyond the technical milestones, Remote Attendant 6G establishes a sustainable “Mobility-as-a-Service” model. It reduces the need for physical escorts, lowers operational costs for healthcare providers, and—most importantly—provides vulnerable citizens with the autonomy to navigate urban spaces safely and confidently.
