AgroGuard
AI-Enhanced Pheromone Trap for Scalable High-Density Real-Time Pest Monitoring
AI-enhanced pheromone trap that enables scalable, high-density, real-time pest monitoring.
AgroGuard is an agrifood service for real-time pest monitoring that combines pheromone traps, edge AI, and private 5G connectivity to enable scalable, high-density surveillance in the field. The solution will be deployed at the La Mayora experimental farm within the UMA testbed, using modular traps equipped with sticky sheets, a camera, an edge computing unit, and a 4/5G interface. Images of captured insects will be transmitted over UMA’s private 5G network to edge servers, where AI models will classify target pest species within milliseconds. The project will quantify end-to-end performance in a beyond-5G environment by measuring latency, throughput, packet loss, and classification accuracy under increasing numbers of simultaneously connected traps.
Â
The objective is to demonstrate that dense deployments can provide low-latency, reliable detection of pest outbreaks, enabling earlier and more targeted interventions. This supports farmers in reducing crop losses and optimizing pesticide use through better-timed, evidence-based actions.
Â
AgroGuard will be implemented in three phases. In Specification and Design, the system architecture, operational setup, and KPIs will be finalized. In Development and Deployment, the trap hardware and software will be upgraded and installed across the UMA testbed. In Validation and Evaluation, the project will run scalability experiments and field demonstrations to assess technical performance and operational readiness.
Â
Expected results include: (i) a 5G-enabled AI pheromone trap system integrated with UMA’s edge cloud; (ii) validated scalability with quantified network and AI performance metrics; (iii) an openly released AI model; and (iv) at least one public demonstration and dissemination activity (event or conference) showcasing results and lessons learned.
